「 HASHIMOTO'S MINIATURES UNIVERSAL LANGUAGE 」

Miniatures by the Japanese author Naotsugu Hashimoto, who studied graphics at University of Tokyo, were created by combining, for us less familiar techniques, of Chinese watercolours and dry point. Almost achromatic watercolours, shaded as dark ink, reduced palette between black and blue with rare traces of brown, almost transparent rice paper, is the basis for a print cliché. Such an unusual procedure, compound of graphics and painting techniques, on deep printing paper, with collage-like airy watercolours segment, reminds of poppy petal trapped in the herbarium.

The watercolour interventions over prints of contour graphics were well known in the European region since the first half of the fifteenth to the beginning of the eighteenth century. Woodcuts, engravings in steel or copper, were subsequently painted with watercolours, often with the help of templates, in making playing cards, illustrations, geographical maps or church indulgences.
For Hashimoto's procedure watercolour is starting point. By painterly gesture signs are made, and by a thoughtful skills of graphic artists, the single, unique prints. These are the first steps towards the sanctuary in the observer's heart, completed by ideas and thoughts merging. A series of miniatures can be thought of as a collection of pebbles preserved as a memento that resemble lumps of minerals deposited through millennia, sedimentary debris fragments, forgotten and found pieces of antiques, carvings, pottery with scenes assembling by our imagination, desires or dreams. We may recognize traces on the wall, dilapidated lime layers remembering leaves, deaths, sinking and waking, flickering light through the crack ... These are interpretations based on personal perception of form.

Associations are multiplying by every repeated immersion into compositions created by balanced game of lines and hatchings, and picking as by over collection of memories, we become actors, and by interpretation of Hashimoto's monotypes, we begin to talk with ourselves.

Hashimoto's compositions are not static and conventionally bounded within the rectangular cliché. Instead, they are of complex, often amorphous forms in a gentle movement suggesting the life process, happenings in this very moment, like a leaf resisting to wind, a bird that nests in the sunset, buzzing swarm in flight, ice skaters in love exaltation, lullaby heard in the distance, or quietly sparks crackling of just blazing fire.

Matisse called his abstract paintings "the compositions according to chance laws". Accordingly, Hashimoto's achromatic monotypes could be described as "compositions of hint", a hint of form, using by the author to take the first steps towards us, without intending to understand them as waymarks or signs for decryption. These are incentives for finding our own conclusion, "haiku" impressions subjected to change. We can watch them with admiration as the jewel on the palm or enjoy the feeling of monumentality as if we were in front of the immensity of the universe. The joy or melancholy, dead silence or screak of marine turbines, light or darkness are reflections of our mind state. Hashimoto offers no solution and does not call into doubt nor precondition, takes every possible stride, completing the initiated.

Inspired by these works of art, the poet Zvonimir Kostic Palanski has carved his thoughts in words through over fifty poems. He polemics, he asks himself and us, concludes, encouraged, calling for "a singing competition". We begin to ask ourselves if we see wings of a bird, a leaf or something else from our recollection. He helps us to look and perceive, to feel and empathize, or to imagine and rebel. The verses of the poem "Roof", where the poet tells us: "They raised him as we pray, we now cover the sky and prayers are left unfulfilled",  trigger strong emotions.

In his own way, Palanski whales string of pearls by jewels. Somewhere the words thread poetically melodic and soft, elsewhere they startle us as a drawn sword flash. "Dragonfly ... comes down to a young willow tree to touch the tear of the river that sighs underneath" and "behind the fallen tree the root remains and wounded air, behind the fallen man only the memory of the sword glance." That's life!

The song "The Wall," creates a series of unreal, phantasmagorical images. Such poetic experience we can trust, but is no less convincing picture of the wall into which we plunge to become a coherent part of this angled matter which cracks homes shells, snails and moss, as a hint of possible life. Or ... imagine a dock, part of the pier withstood the vagaries of the sea, against which raging waves brake and where rested Sun in the sunset.

A delightful combination of thoughts, two-voices tune, understandable language of Hashimoto's visually shaped poetics and word echoes.
The result is a multifaceted experience, evolution of thought in us.

素晴らしいテキストをありがとうございます。

最後の行

we begin to talk with ourselves. ...
.... 版画の解釈によって私たちは自分自身と話始める。

詩的…あぁ…素敵です。

今回の展覧会で多くの方々に助けられました。
ここに深く感謝申し上げます。
